You are driving alone on a busy road when a water bottle rolls off the passenger seat onto the floor. What should you do?
Correct answer: Leave it where it is until you can stop in a safe place, then pick it up.
Why
The 2026 New Jersey manual names four kinds of distraction: visual (eyes off the road), manual (hands off the wheel), cognitive (mind off driving) and auditory. Reaching for a loose object causes the first three at once. At highway speed, even a few seconds of looking away can mean traveling the length of a football field without seeing the road. Secure loose items before you start, and deal with anything that falls only after you stop safely.
