Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You drive down an entrance ramp onto a highway where traffic is moving at about 55 mph. The acceleration lane ahead of you is clear. How should you join the traffic?
A travels along a clear acceleration lane beside highway traffic B and C. A card states that the highway traffic is moving at 55 mph.
Correct answer: Signal, build up to the speed of traffic, yield to cars on the highway, and merge into a safe gap.
Why
New Jersey highways, parkways and turnpikes carry traffic at speeds up to 65 mph, so a merge is safest when your speed is close to the speed of the traffic you join. Obey any advisory speed on the ramp, then use the acceleration lane to speed up while you look for a gap. Drivers already on the main road have priority, so fit your speed to a gap instead of expecting others to make one. A stop in the acceleration lane makes a safe merge much harder.
