After a DUI conviction, a court orders an ignition interlock device in the car that Riley drives most. What does the device do?
Correct answer: It checks Riley's breath and blocks the engine from starting above a set BAC.
Why
New Jersey courts order an interlock after a DUI or a refusal to take a breath test, in the vehicle the person owns, leases or drives most. How long it stays depends on the offense: for example, three months for a first offense with a BAC of 0.08 to under 0.10 percent, and two to four years after a second or later offense. The device is in addition to the other penalties; it does not replace them.
