Lee moves to New Jersey on March 1 with a car registered in another state. That registration expires on March 31. By when must Lee title and register the car in New Jersey?
Correct answer: By March 31, when the out-of-state registration expires
Why
N.J.S.A. 39:3-17.1 gives a new resident 60 days to register the vehicle, and a car cannot be driven once its registration has expired. The titled owner, or a person allowed to act for the owner, must visit an MVC Vehicle Center to do this. Missing the deadline can bring a fine of up to $250 for a first offense.
