Your pickup truck has only one row of seats. You must drive your 1-year-old, who weighs 22 pounds, in a rear-facing car seat. The truck has a passenger air bag with an on-off switch. What must you do?
Correct answer: Turn the passenger air bag off, then install the rear-facing seat in front.
Why
Air bags inflate at up to 200 mph, and they can seriously injure or kill a child in the front seat, especially one in a rear-facing seat close to the dashboard. That is why federal rules allow air bag on-off switches in pickups and other vehicles with no rear seat. Whenever a vehicle does have a rear seat, children under 8 must ride there, and the manual advises keeping all children 12 and younger in the back.
