At night on a rural highway, you are about 150 feet behind a pickup that is going the same way. Your high beams are on, and no traffic is coming toward you. What should you do?
At night, A follows silver pickup B in the same direction about 150 feet ahead. A’s high beams reach toward the pickup; no oncoming car is shown.
Correct answer: Switch to your low beams, because you are closer than 200 feet to the pickup ahead.
Why
Glare in the mirrors can blind the driver ahead, just as oncoming high beams can. NMSA 66-3-831 requires low beams when you overtake or follow a vehicle within 200 feet, and the manual also advises low beams in heavy traffic. A longer following distance at night also gives you more time to see and react to hazards in your headlights.
