As you drive down an entrance ramp, you see that the freeway lane beside the ramp is full, with no gap for you. What should you do?
A travels along a freeway entrance ramp while cars closely occupy the adjacent right freeway lane. A has not yet reached the ramp’s taper.
Correct answer: Slow down while still on the ramp, so you have room to speed up when a gap opens.
Why
The ramp and the acceleration lane are your space to build speed, so do not use it all up before you find a gap. Easing off early lets you pick a gap and still match the speed of traffic when you move over. A driver behind you on the ramp may be watching the freeway, so a sudden stop at the end can cause a rear-end crash.
