You drive down a neighborhood street. Just ahead, a young child on a bike is about to ride out of a driveway into the street without looking. How should you use your horn?
A approaches along a neighborhood street as child B rides toward the street from a driveway on the left. B has not yet entered the roadway.
Correct answer: Give a sharp blast on the horn at once, and slow down, ready to stop
Why
Use a light tap on the horn when there is no immediate danger, for example when another driver is not paying attention. Use a sharp blast when there is danger, for example when a child or an older person is about to enter the street or a car is about to hit you. NMSA 66-3-843 says that a driver must use the horn when it is reasonably needed for safe operation and must not use it at other times.
