On a snowy road, the rear of your car starts to slide to the right. What should you do?
A is on a snowy roadway near a bend. A dark arrow at the rear of the car points to its right, indicating the rear sliding outward.
Correct answer: Stay off the brake and steer where you want the car to go, then straighten the wheel
Why
Skids happen when the tires lose their grip, most often because a driver goes too fast for the road. When the rear slides right, the front turns left, so steering toward your path means a small turn to the right. Keep making small corrections, left and right, until the car moves straight under your control. The best defense is a lower speed on wet, snowy or icy roads.
