At night you drive into thick fog. You switch on your high beams, and the road ahead turns into a bright white glare. What should you do?
A drives into thick fog at night with its high beams on. The wide beam produces bright reflected glare ahead and hides the road; no corrective light choice is shown.
Correct answer: Switch back to low beams, slow down, and signal and brake earlier than you usually would.
Why
Falling rain and snow reflect high-beam light in the same way that fog does. In New York, fog lights must be an approved type and installed correctly: front fog lights are white or amber, and rear fog lights are red. Switch your fog lights off when visibility improves so that they do not bother other drivers.
