A court orders a driver convicted of DWI to install an ignition interlock in her car. What does this device do?
Correct answer: It tests her breath, and the car will not start without an acceptable sample
Why
Under Leandra's Law, courts must order anyone convicted of DWI or aggravated DWI to install and keep an interlock on any vehicle they own or operate for at least 12 months. The driver normally pays for the device, although a court can set a payment plan or waive the cost for a driver who cannot afford it. The requirement can end after six months with proof that the device was installed and kept that long, unless the court orders a longer period.
