You are driving your 1-year-old niece. She rides in a rear-facing child safety seat, and your car has a front passenger air bag. Where should you install her seat?
An enlarged cutaway of car A shows the empty rear bench and front seats, with the front of the car at the right. The card states that the car has a front passenger air bag; no child seat position is selected.
Correct answer: In the back seat, still rear-facing, held in place by a seat belt or the LATCH system
Why
A front air bag opens with great force. If a rear-facing seat is in front of it, the air bag can strike the back of the child seat and seriously injure the baby. New York law also requires a child under age 2 to ride rear-facing unless the child has outgrown the seat's rear-facing weight or height limit. The back seat lets you meet both rules.
