At night you turn onto a divided highway. You then see a solid yellow line along the right edge of your lane and a solid white line along the left edge. What does this tell you?
At night, A faces right on one roadway of a divided highway. The solid white edge is on A’s left and the solid yellow edge is on A’s right beside the median.
Correct answer: You are driving against traffic, because the yellow edge line belongs on your left.
Why
Use the line colors as a quick direction check, mainly at night or at a confusing entrance. Yellow lines divide traffic that moves in opposite directions, and white lines divide lanes that go the same way. Red reflective pavement markers are another warning, because they show a wrong-way movement. If you find yourself going the wrong way on an interstate, the handbook tells you to pull onto the right shoulder, stop, and turn around only when the way is clear.
