Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive at 75 mph on the Interstate instead of 30 mph on a city street. Your reaction time to a sudden hazard is the same. What changes?
Two separate road views show the same blue car at 30 mph and at 75 mph. The card states that the driver’s reaction time is the same in both situations; neither distance is selected.
Correct answer: Your car travels much farther during your reaction time, before you even start to brake.
Why
At 75 mph a car covers about 110 feet each second, so even a one-second reaction uses a long stretch of road. A gap that you measure in seconds grows in feet as your speed grows, but a gap that you measure in car lengths does not. Keep at least three seconds of following distance, and more on slippery roads or behind large vehicles.
