As you come up to a railroad crossing, the lights start to flash and the gates begin to come down. You can see the train, and it looks far away. What should you do?
Car A approaches a railroad crossing with flashing red lights and a gate starting to lower. A separate side detail shows the train visible farther down the track; the card says it looks far away.
Correct answer: Stop before the gate and wait until the gates are fully up and the tracks are clear.
Why
Crossing gates come down because a train is close. North Dakota law bans driving through, around, or under a gate that is down or moving, and it requires you to stop at least 15 feet from the nearest rail. Never try to beat a train to the crossing. After the train passes, wait until the gates are fully up and look both ways, because on multiple tracks another train can come from the opposite direction.
