You drive on a four-lane highway with a wide grass median between the two directions of traffic. On the other side of the median, a school bus has stopped with its red lights flashing. What must you do?
A travels on one roadway of a four-lane highway. A broad grass median separates it from school bus B stopped with red lights flashing on the opposite roadway.
Correct answer: Continue with care; you need not stop for a school bus on the other roadway.
Why
The manual gives the general rule that drivers from both directions must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights. North Dakota law adds an exception for a highway with separate roadways, such as a divided highway with a median: traffic on the other roadway need not stop. Painted lines or a center turn lane do not make separate roadways, so on those roads traffic from both directions must still stop.
