You are following a school bus on a two-lane road. The bus turns on its flashing yellow (amber) lights, but its red lights are not on yet. What do the yellow lights tell you, and what should you do?
A follows school bus B on a two-lane road. An enlarged rear-lamp detail shows the yellow warning lamps lit and the red warning lamps dark; the card states that the yellow lights are flashing.
Correct answer: The bus will soon stop to load or unload children, so slow down and get ready to stop.
Why
The amber lights give you time to slow down smoothly before the red lights and stop arm require a full stop. Once the red lights flash, drivers from both directions must stop, except across a divided roadway. Stay stopped until the bus moves, the bus driver signals you to go, or the red lights go off.
