Your engine suddenly stops while you drive, and the steering wheel becomes hard to turn. What should you do?
A travels on a two-lane road beside a clear paved shoulder. The card states that its engine has stopped and the steering wheel has become hard to turn; no recovery path is shown.
Correct answer: Grip the wheel firmly, steer with extra force, and brake steadily off the road.
Why
Power steering and power brakes lose their assist when the engine stops, so you must push harder on the pedal and turn the wheel with more force. After you stop off the road, shift to Park and try to restart. If the engine does not start, raise the hood and turn on the hazard flashers.
