On dry roads, you keep a four-second gap behind the car ahead. Now snow covers the road. What should you do with your speed and your following distance?
Blue car A follows silver car B on a snow-covered two-lane road. A roadside marker supplies a fixed point; the card states that A previously kept a four-second gap on dry pavement.
Correct answer: Slow down and make the gap longer than four seconds, because stopping on snow takes more distance.
Why
Vehicles need a greater distance to stop on slippery roads, so a gap that is safe on dry pavement can be too short on snow. Ohio law requires a following distance that is reasonable for the speed, the traffic, and the condition of the road (ORC 4511.34). Watch for bridges, overpasses, and shaded spots, because they ice first, and tap the brakes lightly to slow down.
