You check a tire with a penny. You put the penny into the deepest groove with Lincoln's head pointing down, and you can see all of his head. What does this tell you?
A copper penny sits headfirst in a worn tire’s deepest tread groove, with Lincoln’s portrait upside down. All of his head remains above the tread; a magnified view shows the same penny and groove.
Correct answer: The tread is too worn, so replace the tire before you drive on it again.
Why
Tread moves water away from the tire so that the tire can grip the road. Worn tread makes stops longer and makes hydroplaning more likely on wet roads. The Ohio manual gives 1/16 inch as the smallest tread depth for a tire in safe condition. Check your tires often for tread depth, bulges, and damage, and keep them at the pressure on the door jamb.
