You lift your foot, but the accelerator pedal stays down and the car keeps gaining speed. What should you do?
A travels in the right lane with a clear paved shoulder beside it. The card states that the accelerator stays down after the driver lifts a foot and the car keeps gaining speed.
Correct answer: Turn on your flashers, shift to Neutral, brake gradually, and steer off the road.
Why
In Neutral, the engine can race, but it no longer drives the wheels, so the brakes can slow the car. Look for an escape route, such as a shoulder or an open lane, and steer smoothly toward it. After you stop, shift to Park, turn off the engine, and do not drive the car again until it is repaired.
