Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
On a quiet two-lane street, you drive about 150 feet past the driveway that you wanted. No car is behind you. May you back up along the street to the driveway?
Correct answer: No, because the law allows backing on a street only to pull out of a parking space
Why
Backing is hard to control, and other drivers do not expect a car to come toward them in reverse. Oklahoma law lets you back on a street or highway only as far as you need to move from a parked position into the proper lane, and only after you make sure that it is safe. If you pass the place that you want, drive on and come back around the block. The manual also says never to back into an intersection to turn around.
