After heavy rain, you come to a low-water crossing on a county road. A barricade blocks the road, and the water over the road looks only about 6 inches deep. Your pickup truck sits high. What should you do?
A blue high pickup approaches an orange-and-white barricade spanning both lanes of a county road. Floodwater covers the road beyond it after heavy rain. The water appears shallow, but its depth and the pavement beneath it cannot be seen.
Correct answer: Turn around and use another route; do not go around the barricade
Why
Moving water only 6 inches deep can knock a person down and can be enough to make a driver lose control. Most vehicles, even SUVs, can float in 2 feet of water, and the road under the water may be washed away. Take extra care at night, when water on the road is hard to see.
