Passing target: 16 correct signs and 16 correct rules (TLA practice targets)
Near a hillcrest, a driver approaching from beyond the crest cannot see your vehicle within 150 metres. Is a U-turn permitted there?
Blue car A faces east, centred in the right-hand lane of a rural two-way road before a hillcrest. An enlarged road view and a separate road profile show the same position. The crest lies ahead of A. No U-turn is being made and no answer distance is shown.
Correct answer: No, approaching drivers cannot see you in time
Why
HTA section 143(c) prohibits a U-turn on an approach to or near a grade crest when your vehicle cannot be seen by another driver approaching from either direction within 150 metres. The curve rule separately concerns the turning driver’s view of approaching traffic. A railway crossing has a separate prohibition on the crossing and within 30 metres; better visibility does not remove that railway restriction. Also obey signs and check that any permitted turn can be completed safely.
Verified against Highway Traffic Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8 · Section 143(a)–(d), particularly 143(c): distinguishes curve driver view, hillcrest visibility to other drivers, railway 30 m and obstructed bridge/viaduct/tunnel scope.
