At dusk on a rural road, your car hits a dog that ran out of a driveway. The dog is hurt but alive, and traffic is light. What does Oregon law require you to do?
Correct answer: Stop, make a reasonable check of the dog's injuries, and report it at once to the owner, or to the police if you cannot reach the owner.
Why
How much you can do for an injured animal depends on the traffic around you and on the animal's behavior, because a hurt animal can bite and a stop in a dangerous place can cause another crash. Stop as close to the scene as you safely can without blocking traffic more than necessary. To lower the risk of hitting animals, watch for the yellow Deer warning sign, which marks a place where deer often cross, and slow down when you see deer or other wildlife near the road.
