Passing target: 80% (28/35)
You drive in the right lane of a highway that has two lanes in your direction. The speed limit is 55 mph. A tow truck is stopped on the right shoulder with its lights flashing. The left lane is full, so you cannot change lanes safely. What must you do?
A approaches tow truck B with flashing amber warning lights on the right shoulder. Cars C, D and E occupy the left lane, and A cannot change lanes safely. The card states the 55 mph limit.
Correct answer: Slow to 50 mph or less and give the tow truck as much room as you safely can
Why
This rule protects police officers, tow and road crews, and drivers with a breakdown, who often stand close to traffic. It applies to any motor vehicle that is stopped with warning lights or hazard lights on. On a two-lane road with one lane in each direction, you must slow to at least 5 mph under the limit.
