You drive a pickup to the lake. Your 16-year-old cousin wants to ride in the open bed, sitting on a cooler with no safety belt or harness. What does Oregon law say?
Correct answer: You may not carry a person under 18 in the open bed in this way
Why
In a crash or a sudden turn, a person in an open pickup bed can be thrown out of the vehicle. Oregon law prohibits carrying anyone under 18 on the hood, fender, running board or open bed, with narrow exceptions such as an approved belt or harness or a parade. A dog in the bed must be held by a framework, carrier or other device that keeps it from falling out.
