You come to a stop sign. There is a white stop line, and a marked crosswalk just beyond it. A hedge on the corner blocks your view of cross traffic. What should you do?
A approaches a northbound STOP sign. A white stop line is before the marked crosswalk. A tall hedge stands at the left corner and blocks the view along the cross street.
Correct answer: Stop before the stop line, then ease forward to look if you still cannot see.
Why
The stop line marks where your first stop must be, and it keeps the crosswalk clear for people on foot. With no stop line, stop before the marked crosswalk; with neither, stop at the point nearest the cross street where you can see its traffic, and yield to anyone in the unmarked crosswalk. A slow creep forward after the full stop is the safe way to deal with a blocked view.
