Passing target: 80% (28/35)
You drive in the right lane toward a corner with no traffic signal. A person in a wheelchair rolls the front wheels off the curb ramp onto the roadway in the crosswalk and starts to cross in front of your lane. What must you do?
A approaches westward in the right lane toward a marked crosswalk at an intersection with no traffic signal. B faces south on the north curb ramp, with the small front wheelchair wheels just onto the roadway. A labeled close-up shows the same front-wheel position.
Correct answer: Stop and remain stopped, because part of the wheelchair has moved onto the roadway.
Why
A person in a wheelchair has the same crosswalk rights as a person on foot, and is often lower and harder to see. The law protects a pedestrian from the first moment that any part of the person or an extension moves onto the road, so watch the curb ramps and corners as you approach. Once you stop, stay stopped until the person is out of your lane and the lanes next to it.
