You have signaled for a right turn and slowed near the corner. A bike lane runs between your lane and the curb. In your mirror you see a bicyclist coming up behind you in the bike lane. What should you do?
A signals for a right turn near an intersection. B approaches from behind in the marked bike lane between A’s lane and the curb. Both face the same direction.
Correct answer: Let the bicyclist go by first, check your blind spot again, and then turn.
Why
Bicyclists are easy to miss, because they can ride up beside your car while you wait to turn and stay in your blind spot. Oregon requires drivers to yield to people who ride in a bike lane or on a sidewalk before they turn across it. A mirror check alone is not enough, so look over your shoulder just before the turn.
