Passing target: 80% (28/35)
You wait in the intersection on a green light to turn left. An oncoming car is close and is not slowing down. A pedestrian is walking across the crosswalk of the street you will turn onto. What should you do?
A waits inside a signal-controlled intersection to turn left. Its signal is circular green. B approaches from the opposite direction, and C is in the crosswalk across the westbound lane A would enter.
Correct answer: Let the car pass, and wait until the pedestrian is at least 6 feet clear of the new lane.
Why
A left turn crosses the path of oncoming traffic and then the crosswalk of the new street, so it has two conflicts. When the way is clear, turn just before the center point of the intersection and enter the lane just right of the center line. The 6-foot pedestrian rule applies where a traffic signal controls the intersection; where there is no signal, the pedestrian must be past the lane you turn into and the next lane.
