Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
An open curb space starts 12 feet past a fire hydrant, and the hydrant is behind you. You stop with the rear of your car at the start of the space. What is the least distance that you must move forward to park legally?
A is stopped beside the right curb with the hydrant behind it. The card gives a 12-foot gap from the hydrant to A’s rear bumper; no minimum-clearance answer appears.
Correct answer: About 3 feet, so that no part of the car is within 15 feet of the hydrant.
Why
Fire crews must connect hoses fast, and a parked car near a hydrant can delay them. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3353) forbids standing or parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. Keep your whole vehicle outside that distance, also when the curb has no paint and no sign is posted.
