Passing target: 80% (32/40)
Your car’s right wheels drop from the pavement onto a soft dirt shoulder. The path immediately ahead is clear. What should you do first?
A blue car labelled A faces along a two-way road, with its right-side wheels on the dirt shoulder and its left-side wheels on the pavement.
Correct answer: Hold the wheel firmly and ease off the accelerator
Why
Hold the steering wheel firmly and keep the car under control while easing off the accelerator and slowing gradually. Do not make a sudden return at speed. Once you have slowed enough to regain control, check traffic and choose a safe place to return to the pavement; avoid rubbing the tires along the pavement edge. Straighten in your own lane. The PEI handbook describes returning at about a 45-degree angle after slowing; the illustration is a staged teaching sequence, not a measured steering or speed plan.
