Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive down an entrance ramp onto a freeway where traffic moves at about 60 mph. You reach the acceleration lane. How should you use it?
In a scaled freeway overview, A is in the acceleration lane while B and C travel right in the adjacent freeway lane. The card gives the stated traffic speed of about 60 mph, and a separate enlarged vehicle detail identifies the same three cars without showing a selected merge path.
Correct answer: Speed up to about the speed of freeway traffic while you look for a safe gap.
Why
A merge is smooth when the entering car and the freeway traffic move at about the same speed. Check your mirror and look over your shoulder early for a gap, and signal before you merge. The merging area is the part of the freeway just past the acceleration lane, where entering cars join the flow of traffic.
