You plan to turn right at the next corner. A marked bicycle lane runs along the curb on your right. A bicyclist in that lane is beside your car and will go straight through the intersection. What should you do?
Blue A approaches a right turn beside cyclist B, who rides straight in the marked bicycle lane. The bicycle lane has a solid white boundary, the exact bicycle pavement symbol and the words BICYCLE LANE. No turn or bicycle route appears in the question image.
Correct answer: Let the bicyclist go through first, and then cross the bicycle lane behind the bicycle.
Why
Under Rhode Island law, a bicyclist has the same rights and duties as the driver of any other vehicle, so a rider who goes straight has priority over a driver who turns across the rider's path. Before every right turn, check your mirror and look over your right shoulder for bicyclists who are beside or behind you. When you turn left, yield to an oncoming bicyclist in the same way as to an oncoming car.
