Thick fog forms while you drive at night on a two-lane road. You can see only about 200 feet ahead. Which lights should you use?
Blue car A faces east in the near lane of a two-way road at night. Thick fog obscures the road ahead, and the card states that visibility is only about 200 feet; no beam setting is selected.
Correct answer: Low-beam headlights, because high beams reflect off the fog and shorten your view.
Why
Fog, rain and snow reflect bright light back toward the driver. In Rhode Island, headlights must be on any time that you cannot clearly see people and vehicles 500 feet ahead. In thick fog, also slow down, so that you can stop within the distance that your low beams show.
