Your right wheels drop off the pavement onto a soft shoulder that is several inches lower than the road. What should you do?
Correct answer: Ease off the gas, avoid braking if you can, and return where the shoulder is almost level.
Why
A sudden move at the pavement edge is a common cause of run-off-road crashes. With the car slowed and straddling the edge, check traffic, signal and look over your shoulder before you return. Then steer back onto the road, and correct your steering at once when the front tires are back on the pavement, so that you do not cross into the next lane.
