A school bus has stopped with its red lights flashing. You come toward it from the opposite direction. In which case may you keep driving without stopping?
Two separate road views each show blue car A meeting stopped school bus B with red warning lights and an extended STOP arm. The left four-lane road has only painted double yellow center lines; the right has a grass median. Neither view selects an action.
Correct answer: You are on a highway, and a grass median separates your roadway from the bus's roadway.
Why
The Rhode Island manual describes a divided highway as one with a Jersey barrier, guardrail, grass or concrete median, trees or water between the two directions of travel. The law also lets drivers continue when the bus stops in a loading zone next to a limited-access highway where pedestrians may not cross. Traffic behind the bus, on the same roadway, must always stop.
