Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You come to a railroad crossing. The signals are not flashing, but traffic is stopped on the far side, and the open space past the tracks is shorter than your car. What should you do?
A approaches a railroad crossing with dark warning lamps and raised gates. Silver cars B and C are stopped beyond the rails, leaving a gap behind B that is shorter than A; the question shows no stopping mark or route.
Correct answer: Wait before the crossing until the far side has room for your whole car.
Why
A train cannot stop quickly: the manual says that it can need a mile and a half to stop. If traffic ahead stops while you are on the rails, you cannot get out of the train's path in time. Before you enter any crossing, look past it and make sure that your whole car will fit on the far side. Treat every set of tracks as active, even when the signals are dark or the tracks look unused.
