A school bus stops ahead of you on a two-lane road with its red lights flashing. The children cross and reach the sidewalk. The bus door closes, but the red lights still flash. What should you do?
A waits behind westbound school bus B on a two-lane road. Two children are on the sidewalk, B’s red lights still flash and its STOP arm remains out; the card states that the bus door is closed.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the red lights stop flashing or the bus starts to move again.
Why
In Rhode Island, this rule applies to drivers from both directions on a two-lane road, and also on private roads and in parking lots. The bus driver turns on the flashing lights at least 100 feet before a stop, so slow down when you see them start. Rhode Island law also does not let you follow a school bus in the same lane closer than 50 feet.
