Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive at 40 mph when the accelerator pedal sticks and the car keeps speeding up. Kicking the side of the pedal does not free it. What should you do next?
Blue car A is in the right lane of a one-way roadway with a paved shoulder beside it. The card states that A began gaining speed at 40 mph and that kicking the stuck accelerator pedal has not freed it; no escape route or gear choice is shown.
Correct answer: Shift to neutral as you brake, steer off the road, and then turn off the ignition.
Why
First try to free the pedal by kicking its side once or twice. If that fails, neutral is the fastest way to stop the engine from pushing the car. The engine will race and can be damaged, but that is better than a crash. In a car with a manual transmission, push in the clutch.
