You check the tread on your tires. One tire has 3/32 inch of tread left, and another has 1/32 inch. What must you do under Rhode Island law?
Correct answer: Replace only the 1/32-inch tire, because the Rhode Island minimum is 2/32 inch.
Why
Tread grooves carry water away from the tire, so that the tire keeps contact with the road. As the tread wears down, the tire can hydroplane at lower speeds and needs a longer distance to stop on wet pavement. The manual also says not to mix radial and bias-belted tires on one car, and to check tire pressure when the tires are cold.
