Smoke and flames come from under the hood. You have pulled off the road and turned off the ignition. The fire grows quickly. What should you do?
Blue car A is stopped on the paved shoulder of a two-way roadway. Smoke and flames escape from the front of its closed hood; an enlarged hood detail shows the same condition, and the card says the ignition is off. No evacuation distance or waiting place is marked.
Correct answer: Get everyone out, call 911, keep the hood closed, and move at least 100 feet away.
Why
As soon as you see smoke from under the hood, pull off the road at once; do not drive on to look for a better place. Let the firefighters put out the fire, and keep other people away from the car too. A car can be replaced, but people cannot.
