You drive into a work zone with a posted construction speed limit. Traffic slows and speeds up often, and you see no workers at the moment. What should you do?
Blue car A follows silver car B beside work-zone cones in daylight. An enlarged sign detail reads SPEED LIMIT 35. The card states that traffic repeatedly slows and speeds up and no workers are visible. No route or following-gap mark appears.
Correct answer: Obey the work-zone limit and leave extra space, because most work-zone crashes are rear-end crashes.
Why
Work zones can change from hour to hour, with new lane shifts, uneven pavement and equipment that enters the road. Speed and inattention are two of the most common causes of work-zone crashes. In Rhode Island, the fines for traffic violations are doubled in a construction zone that has signs for it. Merge early, put your phone away and expect sudden stops.
