Passing target: 20 correct signs and 20 correct rules
A follows a large truck B that blocks A's view of traffic ahead. What does SGI recommend to restore a useful safety margin?
Blue A follows large white truck B on a highway. No gap hatch, distance bracket, mirror inset or safe-gap label appears in the question.
Correct answer: Drop back to more than three seconds until you can see around the truck.
Why
When a large truck or van blocks your view, drop back to more than three seconds until you can see around it. Do not give up sight distance and response time merely to prevent someone entering the gap. SGI also warns about a truck's rear blind spot: if you cannot see its mirrors, its driver cannot see you. Seeing the mirrors is a useful visibility cue, not a guarantee that the driver has noticed you or that the following gap is sufficient.
