Passing target: 20 correct signs and 20 correct rules
A railway crossing gate is down across your lane and its red warning lights are active. You cannot see a train. What should you do?
A railway crossing has a lowered gate and active red warning lamps on the mast, with no car at a selected stopping position.
Correct answer: Stay stopped, and cross only after the gate is raised and it is safe.
Why
Never drive around a lowered railway crossing gate. Wait until it is raised and it is safe to cross; check for another train and enough room beyond the tracks. This is a gated crossing. SGI separately describes a crossing without gates, where a driver may proceed after stopping while red lights flash only when it is safe; that ungated rule does not permit bypassing a lowered gate.
