Passing target: 80% (24/30)
Your engine suddenly shuts off while you drive at 45 mph. The steering wheel feels much heavier. What should you do?
Blue car A is shown on a roadway. The white card states that its engine has stopped at 45 mph and steering has become heavier.
Correct answer: Grip the wheel firmly, steer to a safe spot, and brake with steady pressure to pull off.
Why
Without engine power, power steering and power brakes lose their assist, so you must use more force, but both still work. After you are off the road, try to restart; if the engine does not start, raise the hood, turn on the emergency flashers and call for help. A calm, steady exit protects you from the traffic behind you.
