Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On an interstate with three lanes in your direction, you are in the far-left lane and have just passed a slow truck. A car is now right behind you, the center lane is clear, and your exit is 15 miles ahead on the right. What should you do?
A has overtaken truck B on a three-lane interstate and remains in the far-left lane, with car C close behind. The center lane is clear; the card states that A’s exit is 15 miles ahead.
Correct answer: Move back to the right when it is safe, because the far-left lane is for passing.
Why
S.C. Code 56-5-1885 lists the exceptions, for example when no vehicle is directly behind you, when heavy traffic makes the right lane impractical, or when there is a hazard in the right lane. When you keep the far-left lane open, faster drivers can pass on the left, where others expect them. Signs along the interstates also tell slower traffic to keep right.
