Regulatory, Lane & Parking SignsStandalone practice
You pass this sign on a dry, straight road on a clear day. Traffic is light, and most cars around you go about 52 mph. What is the fastest that you may legally drive?

Correct answer: 45 mph, because the sign shows the highest legal speed in ideal conditions
Why
The number on the sign is the limit for ideal conditions. When rain, darkness, heavy traffic or curves make driving harder, the law requires a speed that is reasonable and prudent for those conditions, which can be well below the posted number. A higher speed also makes your stopping distance longer, so even a small increase over the limit leaves you less time to react.
