You drive at night on a dark rural highway with your high beams on. A car appears ahead, coming toward you. When does the manual say to switch to low beams?
In an explicitly enlarged night beam detail, blue A uses high beams and silver B approaches in the opposing lane. No distance value, bracket or selected dimming point appears.
Correct answer: When the car comes within about 500 feet, about one block away.
Why
High beams let you see about twice as far as low beams, so they help on dark roads when no one is near. SDCL 32-17-7 requires drivers to lower the beams when they meet or follow another vehicle. If an oncoming driver does not dim, look toward the right edge of the road.
